ERNEST MATTIA, SR.
NORWAY- Ernest “Sam” Mattia, Sr. age 96 of Norway, died Saturday, July 17, 2010 at Freeman Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Kingsford, MI.
He was born on July 24, 1913 in Norway, the son of the late John and Dominica Mattia.
Ernest married Caroline Rocchietti, she preceded him in death on November 6, 1974.
He married Evangeline Cappaert, she preceded him in death on January 11, 1996.
Ernest worked for the Railroad, City of Norway, Ford Motors, Thorton Construction, Caspian Construction, Proksh Construction and Bacco Construction, he retired in 1977.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Norway, and Operating Engineers Local #324 for 60 years.
Ernest enjoyed horses, his passion was Persian Horses, spending time at Rodeos and Fairs doing shows and horse pulling.
He is survived by his sons Ernest (Armine) Mattia, Jr. of Iron Mountain and John (Sandy) Mattia of Norway; daughter Arlene (Ken) Basso of Norway; 10 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; several nieces and
nephews.
Ernest was preceded in death by his daughter JoAnn Dalluge; brothers Frank and Joseph Mattia and sister Mary Guzzanato.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 20 from 9:30-11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Church, with Fr. Raymond Zeugner, presiding.
Interment will follow at the Norway Township Cemetery.
